TRL level definitions

  • TRL 1 – Basic principles observed – theoretical paper published
  • TRL 2 – Technology concept formulated – applied paper published
  • TRL 3 – Experimental proof of concept – theories tested
  • TRL 4 – Technology validated in the lab – theories applied
  • TRL 5 – Technology validated in relevant environment – tests in intended environment
  • TRL 6 – Technology demonstrated in relevant environment – demonstrated to the intended end-user
  • TRL 7 – System prototype used in operational environment – used by the intended end-user
  • TRL 8 – Commercial launch of product or service
  • TRL 9 – Deployed in the mass market

An initial report was put together to test the process but in future it is proposed that this will be a living database with regular updates.
