US satellite broadcaster EchoStar added 330,000 net new subscribers in the three months to the end of December, taking its total subscriber base to 12.04m, up by 1.135m at the same point in 2004.
EchoStar posted quarterly profits of $133m, up from $70m a year ago, on revenues of $2.18bn, up 12.8%.
EchoStar is the second-largest satellite broadcaster in the US after DirecTV. Last month it posted fourth-quarter profits of $121.2m compared with year-ago losses of $288.5m, on revenues of $3.6bn, up 7%. DirecTV added 200,000 net subscribers in the quarter, taking its base to 15.13m.
EchoStar and DirecTV are understood to be discussing the creation of a high-speed wireless network which will help the satellite operators compete against cable operators and telecommunications groups offering television services via broadband.
