AT&T's U-verse reaches second US city

AT&T's roll-out of internet protocol television (IPTV) has reached its second US city. Launched in June in San Antonio, the IPTV service, known as U-verse, is now available in Houston. U-verse was developed by SBC Communications—which merged with AT&T, creating America's largest telco, last year, under the Project Lightspeed initiative.

U-verse delivers digital TV and high-speed broadband services via a fibre-optic network stretching into residential neighbourhoods. U-verse competes head on with US cable operators such as Comcast and Time Warner. Rival telco Verizon is also rolling out an IPTV service across the US.

More than 25 high-definition television channels are now included in the U-verse service. "AT&T U-verse changes the way customers look at home entertainment. We've reinvented television and introduced a better experience that brings a new level of personalisation, simplicity and satisfaction to the digital lifestyle," said Ed Cholerton, AT&T vice president and general manager for the Houston region.

"We're excited that Houston consumers are among the first in the nation to enjoy our innovative U-verse services."
