BSkyB has hailed usage figures for its Sky Mobile TV service on Vodafone's 3G network.
Since November 1, when the 19-channel Sky Mobile TV service launched, Vodafone customers have accessed 1m streams of mobile TV channels, which also include mixed genre channels such as Channel 4.
Sky Mobile TV—which offers 24-hour news, sport, entertainment and documentary programmes to all Vodafone live! with 3G customers—is available free until January 31. Vodafone UK had 341,000 Vodafone live! with 3G customers at the end of September.
Stephen Nuttall, BSkyB's director of business development, said: "These figures demonstrate a real consumer appetite for mobile TV.
"As 3G take-up grows, we believe that many more people will enjoy access to news and entertainment on the move.
"This is a strong start for an innovative new service."
Al Russell, Head of Content and Advanced Messaging, Vodafone UK, said: "The initial success of the mobile TV service has clearly demonstrated that Vodafone customers want more from their phones than just to make calls.
"We expect uptake of the service to continue to increase and are already experiencing significant interest in channels such as the England tour Of Pakistan."
Sky says the introduction of Sky Mobile TV is part of the broadcaster's drive to give customers "flexible and convenient" ways to watch its services.
