Archos, a French company specialising in portable media players, has launched a new multimedia device aimed at consumers wishing to record TV shows and watch them on the move.
The AV400 series offers a choice of 20Gb or 80Gb of storage to record video, stills and audio content in a several popular formats: for video, MPEG 4 SP, XviD, DivX 4 and DivX5; JPEG and BMP for stills; MP3, WMA and WAV for audio.
The players used MPEG 4 SP to record programming from a digital TV set, set-top box or VCR via a docking cradle, which can control the VCR or set-top box tuner. The device also incorporates a timer, built-in microphone, audio inputs, and a CompactFlash slot, allowing a picture taken by digital camera to record straight to the AV400's hard drive.
Archos said it will offer a separate FM tuner that can also be used to record radio programmes. The 80GB AV480 is on sale now for £600, with the 20GB AV420 due on July 19 at £400.
