Ntl's mobile arm, Virgin Mobile, is reportedly set to launch its mobile broadcast television service next week in conjunction with BT's Movio division. According to The Guardian, the service—broadcast using digital radio spectrum—will offer six channels. The full channel line-up is also due to be announced next week.
Virgin Mobile is key to ntl's 'quadruple-play' strategy which includes digital television bundled with fixed line telephony and high-speed internet access. The mobile launch makes ntl the first UK communications group to offer consumers a quad-play deal.
Virgin Mobile trialled a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) mobile television service with BT last year with 1,000 users within the M25 area.
DAB spectrum was provided by a joint venture of Digital One, the national digital multiplex owned by GCap Media and BT.
