Digital encoding specialist Tandberg Television has been chosen by the newly launched primetime US television network MyNetworkTV to provide both high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) MPEG-2 encoding solutions.
The deal marks the sixth broadcast network in the States currently using Tandberg systems for satellite distribution of network programming to affiliates.
Implementation of the new system will enable MyNetworkTV, the only HD broadcast TV network in the US, to deploy a satellite distribution system enabling high quality video.
At its network origination centre in Los Angeles, MyNetworkTV will deploy Tandberg's E5710 and E5780 MPEG-2 SD and HD encoders, MX5620 multiplexers and Director v5 network management and receiver control system. Each of MyNetworkTV's 167 affiliates, depending on their use of either the SD or HD feed (or both), will deploy a TT1260 MPEG-2 SD or TT1280 MPEG-2 HD professional receiver.
Tandberg's senior director of business development, Lisa Hobbs, said her company was "pleased to have been chosen to provide the video and audio distribution system for the launch of MyNetworkTV in the US.
She went on to say: "Our comprehensive range of encoding and receiving solutions, designed with the rigors of 24-hour-a-day broadcasting in mind, has made us the leading choice for US broadcasters today. We look forward to working with MyNetworkTV both during and after the launch of its new network".
This week, Tandberg warned investors that revenues will be approximately $80m for the third quarter, well below the expected $100m.
