Mobile operator 3 is to trial a DVB-H broadcast mobile television service in Ireland. The one-year Irish trial follows the launch of a DVB-H mobile TV service by 3 Italia this summer. That service, known as WalkTV, won 140,000 customers six weeks after launching.
Ireland's communications regulator awarded 3 a licence to test the DVB-H technology. 3 Ireland managing director Robert Finnegan said: "3 Italy was first in Europe to launch broadcast TV over mobile, so as a group we are already leading the development of this new technology.
"Ireland has a high take-up of digital TV services compared to many EU countries with 42% of all households using digital TV services."
Communications minister Noel Dempsey said: "I welcome all developments in the digital television area. It is particularly important that Ireland rolls out a digital terrestrial television network in the coming years and that the full range of digital services become available to the Irish citizen."
3 will offer a package of TV content, including Barclays Premiership highlights, a best of Father Ted channel, and 3's own music channel.
