ITV Local aims to carry live soccer

ITV's internet TV service, ITV Local, plans to air Football League matches. ITV owns rights to League games and aims to offer highlights and live coverage on broadband.

ITV's Meridian managing director Lindsay Charlton—who launched the Brighton and Hastings ITV Local broadband TV trial last October—said: "I think one of the great things about ITV Local is its ability to broadcast live. Rights are a major issue, but there is also a sea of sporting activity below the professional level.

"Football is the place I'd like to start, but there are other sports that we're looking at."

ITV Local is one of 120 broadband TV channels enabled by Narrowstep.

  • ITV has appointed Fremantle's Melissa Goodwin to the newly created position of head of mobile, responsible for growing new revenues from services such as ITV1's streamed content on 3 handsets.
