UK cable operator ntl Telewest has announced a landmark agreement with Channel 4 to make its programmes available on-demand. Under the three-year agreement the cable group's 2.8m subscribers will be able to catch up on programmes broadcast in Channel 4's schedule, and watch classic shows such as Shameless, Queer As Folk, Drop The Dead Donkey and Jamie's School Dinners.
Ntl said the on-demand content would be refreshed "on a regular basis" and will include a seven-day free catch-up service for the majority of Channel 4's primetime TV schedule, including popular shows such as Hollyoaks, Family Brat Camp, Goldplated and Deal Or No Deal.
Rod Henwood, new business director, at Channel 4 said: "Channel 4 is the most innovative and distinctive brand in UK television—and we want to extend this reputation by taking a pioneering role in video-on-demand (VOD). This agreement with ntl Telewest underlines our ambitions. It is a major step towards making Channel 4 content available on demand across multiple platforms and lays the foundation for the launch of our bespoke on-demand service later this year."
Ernie Cormier, chief commercial officer, ntl Telewest added: "Cable is delivering the best digital TV experience available in the UK. With our on-demand service customers can watch over 500 movies, thousands of music videos, hundreds of classic series as well as catching up on popular TV shows they have missed. Today's announcement is a mega deal for our customers who now have access to even more great content from Channel 4."
