Orange and ITV1 and production company Endemol have joined forces to screen a music chart of mobile ringtones, the jingles used to alert mobile phone users to incoming calls.
The weekly show will be called Orange Playlist and is to be paid for in part by the France Telecom-parented mobile operator and is scheduled to be shown in the UK from the end of next month.
Although the show will be aimed at a younger audience, the ringtone chart is mooted for a late-night slot and is lined up for an initial six-month run.
Viewers will be encouraged to send texts and picture messages to the programme with the best appearing on screen. The show will also offer a run-down of the top five singles in the download and traditional charts.
The show is considered timely, as ringtones are now outselling CD singles in new digital media formats.
