The Polish national public broadcaster TVP has begun DTT trials in the south eastern administrative region of Pokarpacie. Employing transmission facilities owned by national telco subsidiary TP EmiTel located in Sucha Góra, it is distributing its two national channels (TVP1 and TVP2), regional network TVP3 and public radio station Radio Rzeszów.
Although the trials are ostensibly being undertaken to improve the coverage of TVP3 in the region, they are seen as ground breaking, with representatives from TV stations in neighbouring Slovakia and Ukraine having attended their start.
To watch the digital TVP channels, however, viewers will have to buy receivers costing around PLN500 (€106). TVP has assured them this will be a good investment, with up to 15 TV channels likely to be available on a future DTT platform, which will be launched following the enactment of a new radio and TV law (probably) in late 2004.
