2013 will be the year in which the television industry starts preparing for a full roll-out of 4K televisions, according to Deloitte's latest Technology, Media & Telecommunications Predictions report.
The next iteration of HD television, known as 4K, offers four times the resolution of the current highest standard HD TV. Deloitte is predicting that test broadcasts of 4K services will take place in 2013 with commercial services to be rolled out in 2014/15. About 20 TV sets will be available to those wishing to spend $15,000—$25,000 on a set.
Demand for 4K will grow in the medium term as consumers expect higher resolutions and larger screens, say Deloitte.
The report also predicts an upsurge in momentum behind LTE, with 2013 being the first year in which LTE thrives across multiple markets. Deloitte has forecasted a 200 million subscriber base by year end, with those on LTE tariffs representing about 10 percent of all service revenues.
