Sony has revealed its plans to launch a “cloud TV” service, bringing live TV programmes and on-demand content to its TVs and its PlayStations.
President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, announced Sony’s plans for the US TV services during a presentation at CES 2014, while simultaneously revealing sales numbers for PlayStation 4.
In an interview with the Financial Times, House, expressed that he believes that Sony can succeed with its cloud TV service due to its existing relationships with content companies and the fact that Sony already has a large network of compatible devices in the market.
“We think there is an opportunity to package [a live TV service] with a reasonable amount of scale and the skill set that we’ve established in the [video on demand] area, and with elements of DVR,” Mr House said to the FT.
The service is expected to launch later this year.
