Ofcom has announced its decision to renew the Channel 3 (ITV, STV and UTV) and Channel 5 licences for a further ten-year period commencing on 1 January 2015. It has also published its determination of the financial terms which will apply to the renewed licences. The current licences are due to expire at the end of 2014.
For the Channel 3 licences, Ofcom has also determined the area for which the licences will be renewed. On renewal, Ofcom will create a separate licence for Wales and a new West & South West of England licence, as previously set out in a statement on changes to licensed areas.
The licensees must accept the financial and area determinations decided by Ofcom in order for the licence renewals to be granted. If they accept these, and there are no grounds for refusal, their licences will be renewed in the coming weeks for a period of ten years.
