Vodafone has announced that is is to close its research facility in Silicon Valley, California and expand its team from 12 people to 20 in London to tap into UK engineering skills.
The Vodafone Xone is the 'global innovation centre for Vodafone Group generating disruptive solutions through a mixture of partnerships, incubation and strategic investments in startups from around the world.'
The expanded hub in London will develop mobile technologies with emphasis on building and testing prototype mobile technologies and app development for markets in Europe, Africa and India.
The office in Redwood, CA opened in Jan 2011 in order to incubate startups and fast track their innovations by offering access to Vodafone's labs as well as technical expertise and business advice. Having already opened xone bases in Germany, Italy, Eqypt and New Zealand, Vodafone's Consumer Services Director, Stefano Parisse said; "Establishing a new hub in London will bring our product development team closer to the customers it serves [...] and will allow us to draw on a vast pool of technology talent in the UK.'
