Mobile phone provider Vodafone will return to the UK residential broadband market with an IPTV service in early 2015.
The launch was announced with scant details in the group’s half-yearly results for 2014, which were focused on its 4G mobile growth, which now reaches 1.4 million UK users and covers 48 per cent of the population.
Vodafone told the BBC it will use the BT Openreach network to reach customers, with a fibre backbone acquired when it bought Cable & Wireless Worldwide in 2012.
Vodafone’s UK options for TV include joining the YouView partnership or launching its own platform based on the UK’s digital terrestrial TV network as EE did last week.
Vodafone Red mobile customers already have a choice of entertainment bundles, including Now TV Entertainment and Sky Movies passes, Sky Sports Mobile TV and Netflix membership.
