Stars back Hall's defence of popular BBC

Arts and culture figures from Dame Judi Dench to Chris Patten have backed BBC director-general Tony Hall's defence of the BBC's breadth of content and popular reach.

Hall warned the public did not support a BBC defined by "narrow commercial interests or ideological preconceptions" after culture secretary John Whittingdale suggested it should no longer make popular entertainment shows.

MPs appointed to BIS and Science select committees

New line-ups of MPs have been elected for the Parliamentary select committees for Business, Information and Skills and Science and Technology.

The BIS committee, lead by Labour's Iain Wright, scrutinises the department responsible for higher education, while the Conservatives’ Nicola Blackwood leads oversight of the government's science policy.
