Gartner hype cycle sees TV interaction on the rise

The annual future-gazing event of the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies has been published, with entertainment technologies gesture control and virtual reality making progress towards the coveted Plateau of Productivity.

Further back, augmented reality is slipping into the Trough of Disillusionment, while 3D volumetric displays and brain-computer interfaces are still seeking their Technology Triggers to start the journey.

DLNA standards keep up with Ultra HD

Home media interoperability standard DLNA has updated its certification programme and guidelines for manufacturers to the latest DLNA 3.0 standard, with 4.0 conformance promised.

The new guiidelines cover products offering HEVC, improved media format interoperability and power efficiency, digital media player and digital media renderer integration, and IPv6 support.

TV iPlayers get live restart and pause-and-play

BBC iPlayer viewers on connected TV platforms are being given enhanced playback features added to the desktop edition earlier this year.

Players on YouView, Roku, NOW TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox One are updated today with Live Restart on streaming channels, with pause-and-play coming soon for shifting between devices as you watch, plus further upgrades for mobile and tablet viewing.
