RTL Group—majority owner of the UK's Five—is reportedly planning a raft of pay-TV channel launches across Europe to help safeguard its position in the digital age.
"We're open to pay-TV, but that doesn't mean we're going to introduce it everywhere. It has to make sense as part of digitalisation," said chief executive Gerhard Zeiler said in an interview with Handelsblatt, reported by The Wall Street Journal.
"Every broadcaster isn't going to be able to survive on ad revenue. That's why we're going to establish channels that viewers will have to pay for," said Zeiler.
The article suggested the strategy was "crucial" to the future of RTL Group parent Bertelsmann.
