US mobile television pioneer MobiTV has appointed Virgin Mobile's US co-founder to become its chief marketing officer. Dave Whetstone will be responsible for MobiTV's global marketing strategy and brand development.
Paul Scanlan, MobiTV's previous marketing chief, takes on the roll of chief operating officer.
Whetstone has more than 12 years' experience in the US mobile market. Before Virgin Mobile he held a variety of senior marketing and operational positions over a 7-year period at AirTouch Cellular (now Verizon Wireless).
"MobiTV is a leader and innovator in providing mobile entertainment and is defining the future of mobile television," said Whetstone. "This is definitely an exciting time for MobiTV, as well as a very exciting time for the industry.
"We are on the forefront of a whole new wave of mobile entertainment services."
MobiTV offers more than 20 TV channels including MSNBC, ABC News Now, NBC Mobile, CNBC, FOX Sports, Major League Baseball highlights, The Discovery Channel, TLC, The Weather Channel and Comedy Time.
According to a new survey by Informa, around 125m consumers will be watching television on their mobile phones in five years' time.
Nokia has said it will introduce a mobile TV phone in the first half of 2006. Samsung Electronics from Korea has also demonstrated its first TV phones.
