Sky Italia, News Corporation's Italian pay-TV unit, is reported to have filed a complaint to the European Commission against Italian government subsidies for digital television decoder boxes.

Dow Jones Newswires quoted competition commission spokesman Jonathan Todd as saying: "We are looking into a complaint about alleged subsidies for digital TV set-top boxes." Todd did not confirm which company had complained or against whom the complaint was made.

The Italian government is offering set-top box subsidies to encourage people to make the switch to digital terrestrial television. Italy aims to have completed switchover by the end of 2006.

News Corporation has reportedly argued that the subsidies represents state aid and is distorting competition in Italy.
