The DTG are taking part in an EBU programme of work called 5G Deployments, the latest face-to-face meeting of which took place in Geneva this week and was attended by Head of Wireless Technologies Alex Buchan. The project is looking at 5G for media distribution as well as production and will be producing two reports by the end of the year. The aim of both reports are to get a clear industry agreed view on what 5G can offer for services and applications related to media delivery and production, over and above what is capable today. As such, the project is not looking at technical requirements and parameters of 5G but, instead is looking at how it can be used in real-life cases.
However, other projects within EBU are providing technical input to 3GPP standards to represent broadcast and AV production and the 5G Deployments work is liaising with those groups throughout. Members of the group are from across the whole of Europe and include a range of radio and TV broadcasters, mobile network equipment vendors and manufacturers of production equipment, test equipment, and TVs.
On completion of the reports, the next steps will be to look at how the proposed use-case can become a reality through collaborations and trials.
