Freeview HD is now available to 50% of UK homes in advance of this year’s World Cup, according to Ofcom.
At the technical launch of the platform in December last year, Freeview announced their aim of bringing 50% of the UK into coverage by the World Cup with coverage rising to 60% later that year and reaching 98.5% on completion of the digital switchover in 2012.
New Ofcom research reveals that sales of HD ready TVs topped 24 million by the end of March 2010. HD sales figures from cable and satellite providers in the lead up to the World Cup have also been strong with Sky’s total HD subscriptions topping 2.5 million and Virgin’s V+ HD subscriber base reaching 939,900 by the end of March 2010. High Definition receivers have accounted for around 80% of Freesat sales so far.
