Last night, Boris Johnson appointed his new cabinet ministers including Nicky Morgan MP as the DCMS Secretary of State. Ms Morgan replaces Jeremy Wright MP who held the post for a year in Theresa May’s government.
Morgan, a former solicitor and MP for Loughborough, has rapidly risen through the Conservative ranks after entering Parliament in 2010. She succeeded Michael Gove as Education Secretary in 2014. While in this role, Morgan also served as the Minister for Women and Equalities. Most recently, the Loughborough MP has acted as Chair of the Treasury Select Committee.
Commenting on her new position, the new DCMS Secretary said: “An enormous privilege to take on this fabulous role – although I’m sad to move on from the Commons Treasury which I have absolutely loved chairing. Thank you to my fellow Select Committee members and committee staff.”
Ms Morgan is taking over at a time where the BBC’s decision of the over-75 TV licences and PSB prominence remain key features on the political scene.
