Sony unveils Google powered TV

Sony has unveiled the first high definition TV (HDTV) to be powered by Google TV at an event in New York.

Sony Internet TV enables viewers to watch HDTV, access applications, and browse the Internet.

“We are very proud to be the pioneers of this new entertainment category by delivering the world’s first true Internet TV experience,” added Bob Ishida, Senior Vice President, Corporate Executive, and President of Home Entertainment Business Group, Sony Corporation. “Sony Internet TV creates value by introducing new and compelling ways to enjoy a variety of content.”

Featuring four integrated television models and a Blu-ray Disc player, Sony Internet TV is built on the Android platform, runs the Google Chrome browser and includes an Intel Atom processor for searching Internet and television content.

The TV’s are pre-installed with apps include CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, and YouTube. Sony Internet TV owners will be able to add applications from the Android Market in early 2011.

Sony Internet TV also includes a Dual View function, allowing users to watch television while engaging in social networking or searching for content on the web.

Sony Internet TV and the Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Player are currently on pre-sale at www.SonyStyle.com and www.BestBuy.com, and will be available to purchase from Sony Style stores in the US from 16 October.
