28/07/20

Emma Young is a Graduate R&D Engineer at BBC Research and Development and in her current role with the Audio team she uses her creative skills to drive engagement with newly developed production tools both within and outside the BBC. Emma has worked within multiple teams in BBC R&D, gaining awareness of the breath of research being undertaken to understand future audience needs and to innovate and deliver new ways of experiencing BBC content.

Emma’s early career in audio engineering saw her work on diverse projects ranging from mixing live TV programmes to sound designing for games. She made the move into technology with an Integrated Master of Science degree in IT and Media before solidifying her research skills in an interdisciplinary Masters of Research in the fields of Computing, Design and Management. Continuing in research, Emma has been working towards an interdisciplinary PhD at an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training for Digital Innovation, switching to part-time study after securing a place on the highly coveted BBC R&D Graduate Training Scheme in 2018.

Emma enjoys outreach work and regularly gets involved with initiatives to inspire young women to consider tech careers. She shares BBC R&D’s work by hosting their new YouTube series, ‘BBC R&D Explains’ and represents the BBC on Lancaster University’s Industrial Advisory Board for Computer Science, helping to ensure course content is relevant for our industry’s future needs.
